Kubuntu Translations Day

Kubuntu Translations Day

It’s not a secret that Kubuntu translations have needed love for some time, but it’s not a secret that we want to make Kubuntu Karmic a rock-solid release on translations, either.

So, what’s this?

We’d like to get Kubuntu translations in shape for Karmic and we’re organising a whole day event with this purpose.

  • WHAT: Kubuntu Translations Day
  • WHERE: #kubuntu-devel IRC channel on Freenode
  • WHEN: Wednesday, the 29th of July 2009

How can I participate?

You simply need to join us on #kubuntu-devel on that day and be willing to make Kubuntu translations rock!

Here are some suggestions for activities you can do.

If you are a:

You’ll find this same list of suggestions on the Ubuntu wiki, so please feel free to modify it and expand it with more ideas if you like.

We’ll be at #kubuntu-devel all day and we’ll be happy to answer all your questions on how to help.

Hope to see you there next week!

How about shipping upstream translations? History shows they are always better than the ones Kubuntu ships.

      Hi Tom,

This depends entirely on the team: there are some Kubuntu translation teams which translate upstream and only modify Kubuntu-specific strings or applications, which effectively means that upstream translations are shipped for those.

But I know that this cannot be applied to all teams and we’re trying to improve that, so if you can provide some concrete examples of strings where Kubuntu strings have overriden better upstream ones, we can talk to the particular translation team and see how we can revert them back to the upstream version.

That’s one of the things we can do in the Kubuntu Translations Day, for example.

Its kinda funny that Kubuntu is very well translated already in Irish. So in terms of the Irish translations id say we will focus still on ubuntu itself just because it needs it more.
